A means to render uniform
the power supplied by a
spring (in large clocks). The
spring, enveloped in a
cylinder, turns the toothed
wheel placed on the top and
this, in turn, engages the
teeth of an up-turned spiral
set on a shaft finishing in a
worm screw. This raises and
lowers the spiral and passes
this motion on to the other
toothed shaft. As the spring
gradually runs down, the
ratio will vary between the
number of theet set in
motion by the spring-
powered whell and that of
the teeth of the spiral, thus
maintaining a constant
speed of rotation for the
toothed shaft.
